Purpose: The instructions below detail the steps to refresh a Power BI Schema. A Schema Refresh is required when the dataset changes by either removing a field or renaming it. This is common with product version updates, such as Business Centrals 28.0 release. You should proactively follow the steps below to update any dependent Power BI data models after Business Central has updated to version 28.0. Failure to do so will result in failed Power BI data model refreshes until the steps below are completed.
Step-by-Step Procedures
Step 1: Identify the Failed Dataset
- In Power BI Service, navigate to the workspace
- Locate the dataset (aka Semantic Model) with refresh failures
- View the error message (typically references 404, Entity not found, or OData metadata issues)
Step 2: Download the PBIX File
- In the workspace, select More options (⋯) next to the report
- Choose Download this file (.pbix)
- Save the file locally
Step 3: Open the Report in Power BI Desktop
- Open Power BI Desktop
- Open the downloaded .pbix
- Allow credentials to authenticate if prompted
Step 4: Refresh the Data Source Schema
- In Power BI Desktop, select the Transform data dropdown
- Select Refresh Schema and Data
Step 5: Validate the Model
Before publishing:
- Confirm all tables load successfully
- Check Model view for broken relationships
- Validate key visuals
Step 6: Republish to Power BI Service
- Select Publish in Power BI Desktop
- Choose the original workspace
- Confirm overwrite when prompted
Step 7: Reconfigure Dataset Settings (If Needed)
After republishing:
- Verify scheduled refresh
- Confirm credentials are valid
